Regeneration
Our credentials for town centre renewal and regeneration will be further cemented with delivery in Canning Town and Rainham Village.
In Canning Town - the 6th largest regeneration project in Europe - we have made impressive progress on the way to creating a new town centre location for east London. Our £17m investment has brought about the assembly of 2.5ha of land that is cleared ready for the development of up to 1,800 homes and 60,000 sq m of retail and commercial space. Creating a continuous pedestrian connection north and south of the town is crucial to our plans and our design and planning work will see this happen with the removal of the A13 roundabout commencing in 2010.
LTGDC has purchased the sites necessary to revitalise Rainham Village centre with a new transport interchange, public space, library and new housing. LTGDC has selected Maccreanor Lavington to design the new library at the junction of The Broadway and Ferry Lane in Rainham, adjacent to the railway station. The plans for the building will see the lower floors used as a library and learning centre with space for 40,000 books as well as computers, community meeting rooms, a play group and public advice centre with up to four floors of apartments above. Maccreanor Lavington will also be responsible for designing a new transport interchange and public realm outside Rainham station. £1.2m of Community Infrastructure Funding has been secured from the Department for Communities and Local Government. Construction will commence in 2010.
To capture inward investment interest created by the 2012 Olympic Games the LTGDC is delivering a marketing suite, overlooking the Olympic Park which provides 360 degree views of London's major business landmarks including Canary Wharf. This bespoke high quality facility will allow local boroughs and inward investment agencies to promote investment opportunities in east London and will be open in the autumn 2009.
